“If you want to be happy,set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes.” >Andrew Carnegie
Wise words indeed by the richest man in America in the early 1900’s. I think he has earned his stripes and therefore we can accept what he says. If Carnegie took the time to set worthy goals then what makes us think we can skip this critical step in our quest for happiness, love, money, success, good health, etc.
To set a goal which you might just have half a chance of achieving, you must know what your purpose and your true needs and desires are. Then only can you convert dreams, wishes and ideas into SMART goals. SMART simply means specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and specific time for the achievement of the goal. If your goal is not SMART then it’s just airy fairy, pie in the sky, wishy washy day dreaming!
You should have at least one goal for every area of your life. If you only focus on finances, you might neglect your family. If you only focus on family, you might neglect taking care of your health and so on. Take the time to write out in detail at least one goal for every area of your life viz. family, finances, career, health, friends, recreation.
“If you are bored with your life, if you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things – you don’t have enough goals.” >Lou Holtz
Write out your goal. Make sure it is focused on positive aspects and that it is written in the present, as if you already have it. An example of a SMART goal would be: I am absolutely grateful for my new BMW X3 2009 model black in colour motor vehicle with a panoramic sunroof that I receive by 31 January 2010.
The words I AM are regarded as two of the most powerful words we know! They are endorsing what you desire without any doubt. I follow the I AM with words showing gratitude. When you are grateful this shows a huge leap of faith and expectancy. Let’s face it, if you are not sure that you will achieve your goal, then you might just as well give it up because it is highly likely that you will not achieve that goal.
The words following the words of gratitude are a detailed description of what I want and of course when I expect to receive it. Failing to be specific about what you want and when you want it by will make it very difficult to determine whether you have achieved the goal you wanted to achieve or not.
Once you have written out your goal, read it at least 2 to 3 times a day with enthusiasm and feeling like you really really want it. Spend time first thing when you wake up in the morning and last thing at night to close your eyes and just picture your goal as if you have already receivied it.
Your dream, wish, idea; your goal will become real to you. If you can see it in your mind you will hold it in your hands says Bob Proctor.
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.” >Mark Twain
Action must necessarily follow the writing, verbalizing and visualization of your goals. Make a plan or list of all the things that must be done in order to achieve your goal. Just note what you know has to be done. Then start taking the first step and then going to the next step thereafter. Before you know it you will be well on your way to achieving your goal. Remember you don’t have to see the top of the staircase to take the first step. The Universe will move mountains and align people, places and things so that you get what you ask for when you make the effort in faith.
Also remember, that success leaves clues. Find someone who has already achieved what you want and do the same or similar things. We don’t have to re-invent the wheel ever time we want to use it!
The steps are simply:
* Decide what you want
* WRITE out your SMART goal (for each area of your life)
* Read your goals out loud at least 2 – 3 times per day (verbalize)
* Visualize the acheivement of the goal – see the end result and not the process of achieving the goal
* Plan and take the action steps necessary
* ACHIEVE THAT GOAL!
What are you waiting for??
Set those goals NOW!!
Cause.. Yes!! You CAN!!!
